Welcome back - reopening plans at Rochester Cathedral

Rochester Cathedral is looking forward to welcoming visitors back from May 17th. The Cathedral has been open for private prayer and services since April but this will be the first time this year visitors will be able to come and spend time in the historic Cathedral.

Opening hours will be reduced for the first few weeks but will gradually increase as the Summer Holidays approach. No pre-booking is required but visitors are asked to adhere to socially distancing when inside the Cathedral.  Visitors are encouraged to check the Cathedral website before visiting for the most up to date opening times.

Entry is usually via the West Door but may, on occasion, be via the North Door. This will be due to volunteer shortages.

What’s On

While at the Cathedral visitors will be able to view the Kent Coronavirus Quilt which was created by local artist, Amber Rose. The quilt contains the names of 88 people lost to the Coronavirus in Kent. Each name is hand embroidered and includes a piece of fabric or clothing that is associated with that person. It was started during first lockdown and is dedicated to all those who have lost someone to Coronavirus.

The medieval Crypt will remain closed until later in the summer when the Café and exhibition will reopen. The 2020 exhibition ‘Big History’ which explores the deep history and archaeology behind the cathedral and medieval priory has been extended until at least the end of the year and visitors will be able to visit when it reopens.
